Mumps
Mumps is a mildly contagious viral infection that causes pain and swelling of the salivary glands. Mumps is marked by face pain and neck swelling. Other symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, chills, and aches. Mumps is only spread by contact with infected saliva. Signs and symptoms of mumps may not appear until two to three or more weeks after infection.
Children are most usually affected by mumps, although vaccinations have reduced the incidence of mumps in children, at least within the United States. Children with mumps should be under the care of a qualified health-care practitioner. When mumps affects older individuals, the testes, pancreas, prostate, and central nervous system also may become involved.
